I'm not sure who to be Mad at here.

I went to Battle of the Bands on Friday. It was great fun, but I ~~had~~ have my complaints.

FIRST: Somebody from BYUSA told me there was no filming allowed.

Really? REALLY? I was filming at the request of my friends who were playing in the show, without whom BYUSA wouldn't have any hope of hosting a Battle of the Bands.

IS THERE ANY REASON? ANY REASON at ALL why I can't film? Or do they just enjoy doling out absolutely ARBITRARY rules and regulations? I filmed anyway.

SECOND, they put chairs out everywhere in the ballroom. Chairs.

So you know what? We couldn't get up and dance. We couldn't dance at Battle of the Bands.

You know why? BECAUSE THERE WERE CHAIRS. It's against fire code to have dancing like that when there are isles. Isles created by the freaking chairs!

Fast forward to this morning. I want you to look at this clip from the DU. According to this article, one of the reasons the band that won won was because "the Empirates worked the crowd and got people to their feet".

Then at the end of the article, talking about Can't Stop Won't Stop, "A mob of fans formed in front of the stage, including several students dressed as robots. The students reluctantly took their seats at the request of BYU event staff."

I want to curse. What is this, Footloose? "Stand up, but don't dance!" is what I'm getting here, and I don't like it One Bit.

It's a little disappointing there is enough of a problem with drink theft to post things like this on the soda machine.

I have a confession. There are times, even on this blog, when we say things like "only in Provo" and it's not entirely true. We may be talking about something funny, weird, even overtly Mormon, but they're not always singularly Utah or Utah Valley.

This, on the other hand, really is.

Witnessed at Nicoitalia Pizza, an ostensibly non Utah, Italian themed pizza joint, with an owner wielding an (over-the-top?) Boston accent. But I'm quite sure you would not see this in Italy or Boston, or anywhere else for that matter.

Ironically, I think if you did post this anywhere outside our happy little valley, the immediate response would be something like, "Lower kingdoms? What the H*!! does that mean?"

When I logged in the facebook (from class) the other day, this is what I got. Notice that every picture is our friend the (ostensibly) harmless puppy.

At BYU when you graduate they make a weak attempt to show some appreciation for 4 plus year of hard work by throwing you a graduation party. At this graduation party they raffle off prizes. It's enough to get a ballroom full of prospective grads in a frenzy. The raffle process goes something like this; they present a $15 prize, they announce a number, 2 thousand people wait with baited breath, then 1999 people let out a disgruntled sigh. Repeating this process had everyone foaming at the mouth.

Then it happened, a sure win, they announced a free kids prize for anyone with a kid. the above picture doesn't do it justice but, In a matter of seconds group hysteria sunk in, every couple with a child hoisted their new born babies in the air like they were Charlie Buckets, and their baby was a golden ticket.

And what did they get for risking the general well being of their posterity? either a jump rope or a frisbee....Ridiculous.

I found this empty Diet Coke box and 2 empty Slim Jim cans in the Social Sciences Library* during finals week.

Something about these two items being on the same shelf in the library set off alarms in my brain, there was some kind of correlation, but what was it?...AH YES, of course! The essential survival foods for finals week. (What you lost from the "Diet" in Diet Coke you make up for with the Slim Jims. Don't let the "Slim" fool you; "Slim" refers to the relative thinness of the meatstickthing not to the relative shape of your body after consuming them.) And then it donned (or is it dawned???) on me...Someone is LIVING IN THE LIBRARY. Once again, to my chagrin, I find out that someone else is living out MY dreams.**

Is that title an oxymoron?

I passed my classes. I walked across a stage in a robe and got a nice little folder to put my degree in. Lot's of pomp and circumstance, but it's over now. Feuwf'.

BUT...finals didn't finish without drama. I just heard an interesting story. It took some doing, but I tracked down the source (I just got a degree in journalism, after all).

Here is the story exactly as it came to me. Given the source, I'll vouch for this. It's totally legit. I've met Professor Stice, when I presented him one of these in front of his class. Great guy, and apparently quite the sleuth himself.

I hope your spring has started well. -- This note is to tell you about the results of a cheating investigation I have been finalizing since the end of our final exam last Wednesday. As a result of this investigation, seven Acc 210 students received failing grades of “E” and are currently being referred to BYU’s Honor Code Office. As I have told each of those students, my recommendation is that each of them be expelled from BYU.

During the semester I received indications that a group of students were engaged in a systematic effort to cheat on the Acc 210 exams. I used the Exam 3 results to confirm the existence of this plan. The Exam 3 evidence was generally consistent with there being a ring of people cheating on the exams, but the evidence was not enough (in my opinion) to convict anyone of anything. – I needed further evidence.

To generate this evidence, for the Final Exam I placed four different versions of the exam in the Testing Center. Each version of the exam was identical (including the sequencing of the questions) except that the order of the answer choices was altered. So, a correct answer on one version of the exam would be an incorrect answer on another version.

The evidence generated by this arrangement was overwhelming. For example, in one case a student received a complete set of correct answers from an accomplice who had taken the exam on a previous day. Unfortunately, the student didn’t receive the same version of the exam as had the accomplice. Thus, the student gave a perfect set of answers … for the wrong version. I calculated the odds of this perfect set of wrong answers happening by chance, without possession of the answers for the other version, to be one in 1.495 septillion. Pretty unlikely.

Acc 210 is a challenging class, as were the other courses you took last semester, and I’m sure all of you were presented with opportunities to cheat, in some way or another, during the semester. This note is to thank you for keeping your word and obeying the Honor Code. Whatever grade you got in Acc 210, I consider you a success for maintaining your sacred honor.

I'll tell you a secret; finals are optional if your class is graded on a curve.

My game theory class successfully made an agreement to all not take the final.

If you're wondering what game theory is, it's basically the study of why this kinda stuff should never happen. The difference in this situation was, what people had to lose by not taking the final was not nearly as much as they had to gain by having a story like this to tell everyone they know.

We were at dollar tree, and we were discussing the "surprise for a boy"," surprise for a girl a grab bags." If you're not familiar, these consist of several fun cheap items in a bag that can be used for a a birthday present. As I was looking at the titles on the bags they were pretty normal "for a boy" "for a girl" for "baby girl" and then one bag jumped out from the back "Adult X-Mas," ya know...for that special someone (wink wink).

This is one of those things that can't be learned from a book. Memorization isn't quite muscle-memory.

I'm imagining Chuck Norris studying really hard for his final in Kung-Fu-Kollege. I'll bet this guy was his professor.

I was absolutely puzzled by this title and front graphic. I opened the cover to investigate. It was a short investigation. The book argued the virtues of a genderless society. Ya, you're probably right. Everything would be better if we were all gray and asexual, like flatworms. Those flatworms have got it figured out.

WHO, I ask you WHO buys and/or uses this or any other Big Dog brand merchandise? WHO?

What is this person trying to say with their choice in heavily branded...anything "Big Dog"? Is it a manliness thing? 'Cause I don't think the Harry Potter motif is helping the cause.

On the subject of gender identity, I thought the women's lib movement was largely in the 60's. Apparently, it was still okay to talk down to simple-minded female folk in the 90's.
Maybe I'm being a little harsh though. They are trying to reach out to girlies to explain that darn confusing man machine, the computer.

As I sat in the library studying game theory, I noticed someone else doing some strategic thinking as well. He was playing chess. Chess is an interesting game. You have to get inside the mind of the other player and anticipate his moves. This proves quite difficult, unless the other player is,well... you. Alone. By yourself, in a library cubicle.

I've heard that in some places in Africa, on the jars and cans, they put a picture of the contents as to avoid confusion among those who are illiterate. the story says that Gerber failed to note this in their market research, and as they stocked Africa with their first shipments of baby food with that adorable Gerber baby on the jars, the result was a lot of appalled African women.

I didn't know we had similar problems with illiteracy here in Provo, but apparently at Albertsons they've decided we need our dead pigs to better resemble.... well... dead pigs.

If you ask me, Pork Sausage should fall under the umbrella of advice given in the movie Tommy Boy:

"I could sure get a good look at a t-bone by sticking my head up a bulls butt*, but I'd rather take the butchers word for it."

Even those that are ravenous carnivores would rather not conjure up visions of what their breakfast sausage looked like when it was still alive and kicking. Plus, who wants someone sticking superfluous fingers in their sausage?

This book is a Provo gem and its creative ideas are likely to become a reoccurring feature on the blog, so if you're stumped oh how to ask that special someone to the spring formal, check back often.

Lets break this one down like a fraction.

First Rent or Borrow a ROBOT (think of the word ROBOT being shouted in a deep ominous voice from the future, hence, the all caps). I mean, how have I never thought of that. I'll just head down to the ROBOT rental kiosk in the mall, or better yet, I think Bro. Johnson from the ward has a couple of spare robots lying around maybe I could borrow one.

Second, "Have the ROBOT follow the person around work or school tactfully making comments that are about or to the individual" I guess once you've got a robot this is a no brainer. What's more romantic than a tactful robot following you around followed closely by a giggling frecklefaced kid with an RC remote? I mean nothing exemplifies tactful like a robot ordering a Bacon Bounty Cheese at Arctic Circle.

Could somebody please explain to me why the "Geology of Utah's Nation Parks" charts are...ahem...up-side-down in the Eyring Building? Are these the unbound pages to a Geology Textbook? We couldn't take the time to cut and flip these before framing and adding several placards to draw attention?

Audio/Visual/Data cables aren't things that need to be brand new. Whether it's new in the package or ten years old, if they still conduct electricity, they'll work just fine. For this reason, I like to get mine at D.I. Sometimes they still are new in the package and they're usually cheaper. Usually.
